Fishing The Schuylkill Banks
The Schuylkill Banks is an ideal spot for fishing right in the heart of Philadelphia. The tidal Schuylkill River is home to more than 40 species of fish. Common catches on Schuylkill Banks include catfish, perch, sunfish, carp and bass. Depending on the season and river conditions, you may also catch shad, eel, and a wide variety of other marine life.

Vintage Gear - A Family of K-mounts
My introduction to photography was through my Dad's Pentax kit. It consisted of a K1000 body w/ a 28mm f/2.8, a 50mm f/2, a 135mm f/3.5 and a 70-210mm f/4.5 zoom.
The original Pentax 135mm lens was sold and replaced with a Takumar 135mm f/2.5. I added two 50mm f/1.4's, a 55mm f/2, a 90mm f/2.8 macro , a 200 mm f/4, a 400mm 5.6 (not in this photo) and a 500mm mirror lens to the kit. The Chinon CE-5 was bought from Ebay to replace the K1000 as the film-advance mechanism malfunctions. Manual exposure and focusing make me think twice before pushing down that shutter button.

Bike Locking 101: FAIL
There used to be a spiffy new commuter bike & tire attached to this wheel! Sadly, the owner failed to properly secure the frame to the rack. I'm sure he felt bad about the loss and having to 'hoof' it home that afternoon. I feel bad for him, too.

Backyard Blooms

Fairmount Dam Fishway
The Fairmount Dam Fishway is situated within the Philadelphia city limits on Fairmount Park property, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, 13.6 km (about 8 miles) upstream from the Schuylkill's confluence with the Delaware River. The Fairmount Dam marks the uppermost reach of the tides on the Schuylkill. The improved fish passage at Fairmount will benefit the entire freshwater ecology and economy of the Schuylkill River watershed. (Article excerpt from Philly H20: Fairmount Dam Fishway)

Slacklining is a balance sport that uses nylon webbing tensioned between two anchor points. Slacklining is distinct from tightrope walking in that the line is not held rigidly taut (although it is still under some tension); it is instead dynamic, stretching and bouncing like a long and narrow trampoline. The line's tension can be adjusted to suit the user and different types of dynamic webbing can be used to achieve a variety of feats. The line itself is flat, due to the nature of webbing, thus keeping the slacker's footing from rolling as would be the case with an ordinary rope. The dynamic nature of the line allows for impressive tricks and stunts.

The Schuylkill River Trail parallels Kelly Drive along the east side of the Schuylkill in Philadelphia and is one of the region's most popular running and jogging trails. Each morning and evening the trail is lined with residents and visitors alike. Particularly popular is the 8-mile "Loop" that crosses the Falls Bridge in East Falls. You can begin your trip at a number of places along Kelly Drive or Martin Luther King Drive, but most folks prefer to start at Lloyd Hall or East Falls. Martin Luther King Drive is closed to vehicular traffic on Saturdays and Sundays 6 AM to 5 PM from April to October. The lower portion from Eakins Oval to Sweetbriar Drive re-opens at 12 noon.

A Black Belt Earned
Mariel participated in East West Karate's Black Belt Cycle Team final testing on March 19, 2011 which was held at Maureen M. Welch Elementary School in Southhampton, PA.
She will be awarded her junior black belt at the Black Belt Extravaganza on April 2, 2011 at the Central Bucks East High School Gym, Holicong Road, Doylestown, PA.

Slow Work Day
Fridays are usually relaxed and laid-back. It's when unused vacation days are scheduled to create a 3-day weekend. Some may be nursing 'St. Patrick's Day-induced' hang-overs. And the 80ºF Philly weather was too good to pass off! Oh, well, at least I got my 3-mile run plus a 40-min Spin class done over lunch. And still got to leave early!

One Shy of A Half-Century
I turned another year older on Monday, one shy of a half-century! The Boss broiled New York strip steaks and cooked spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner. We uncorked a bottle of Shiraz that complemented the read meat and pasta very well. For dessert, we had a decadent turtle cake, which turned out to be too small to hold all the candles. So we limited the candles to twelve lest we start a fire in the house! Cheers!
